Frequently Asked Questions
Routine eye exams start at $105. This includes the Optomap retinal screening at no additional charge ($35 value). Sometimes other testing may required at an additional charge, based on the findings during the exam.
Contact lens exams start at $150. This includes the Optomap retinal screening at no additional charge ($35 value). The exam will cost slightly more if you need bifocal contact lenses, have high astigmatism, or are a new contact lens wearer. Gas permeable or “hard” contact lenses are custom made and fitting is much more complicated. Fees are significantly higher for this type of lens fitting.
We recommend patients get their eyes checked every year, whether or not you have noticed a change in vision. Many eye diseases have no symptoms in the early stages. Early detection is vital to protecting your eyes from damage. It is especially important for those over 50 years old to get an eye exam annually.
No. The doctor’s office is a separate business from Walmart. We do not sell glasses, contact lenses, or any other products. We provide eye care services only. We have no financial interest in eyeglass or contact lens sales.
A routine eye exam is best thought of as your annual wellness eye exam. This is a general checkup of you eye health and includes refraction for glasses.
A medical eye exam is when you are presenting with specific problems with your eyes or have a known medical diagnosis related to your eyes. It also includes patients who have been diagnosed with an eye disease or disorder.
Pupil dilation is the procedure where the doctor instills eyedrops to make the pupil much larger than it is normally. With the enlarged pupil, the doctor can then obtain a much better view of the internal structures of the eye. This helps diagnose problems with the eye that can lead to sight threatening complications (e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease). Often the Optomap retinal screening can be substituted for pupil dilation and has no significant side affects or blurry vision.
Pupil dilation causes large pupils that do not constrict when light enters, causing sensitivity to light for the period when the eyedrops are in effect. It also causes the temporary inability to focus at near. The vast majority of patients are able to drive after the procedure. Although these symptoms are generally mild, we cannot make the decision for you as to your comfort level with driving. The Optomap retinal screening does not cause blurred vision.
Absolutely. You will receive a copy of your eyeglass prescription at the conclusion of the exam. If you are being examined for contact lenses, you will receive a copy of your contact lens prescription at the conclusion of the fitting process. Sometimes that is on the same day of the exam and sometimes we need have you return for a followup before finalizing the prescription. Eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions can be used at any eyeglass or contact lens retailer.
Contact lenses are foreign objects worn directly on the eye. As such, they can create changes to the eye over time, even when properly fitted. The health of the eye and the fit of the contact lens must be evaluated by the doctor on a yearly basis to prevent damage to the eye. Power changes are important, but the primary consideration to ensure the eye health is not compromised by contact lens wear.
